    Psychological Evaluations

    What is a psychological evaluation?

A psychological evaluation or assessment is a tool utilized by professionals to help clarify a person’s current state of functioning, identify any psychological issues the person may be experiencing and to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of any psychological issues. Psychological evaluations are not always given when there is a problem. Sometimes, these assessments are administered to identify a person’s strengths, likes and dislikes, and areas in which they are likely to excel. Depending on the reason for referral, psychological evaluations may assess cognitive, achievement, adaptive, executive, social-emotional, and personality functioning

How do I know if I need a psychological evaluation?

Often times, a psychological evaluation will be recommended by a medical doctor, social worker, psychologist or another clinician. A person may also seek an evaluation on their own if they or their loved one is experiencing problems at work, school or at home. When the need for an evaluation has been determined, a person will typically schedule an intake appointment where information about the presenting problem is collected and a date for testing will be scheduled.

What can I expect on the day of testing?

Psychological Evaluations typically consist of various modes of collecting information such as clinical interviews, formal and informal tests, questionnaires, input from teachers, health professionals and/or family members and observation.Psychological Evaluations are conducted at our office. Please refer to our Covid-19 statement for additional information on how we protect our clients (and ourselves) during testing.

How long does a psychological evaluation take?

The length of time needed to complete an evaluation varies from person to person. However, it typically takes between 4-6 hours to complete and is completed in the course of 1-3 days depending on the person. Frequent breaks are provided at the client’s request. After the last day of testing, and if there is no additional information needed, you will be scheduled for a feedback session within 3-4 weeks to discuss findings and recommendations.

How do I prepare for my psychological evaluation?

Arrive on time to your scheduled session having been well rested from the night before. Eat breakfast the morning of the testing session. Wear comfortable garments and dress in layers. You are welcome to bring lunch and/or snacks. It is not advised to research test items beforehand as this may impede our ability to collect accurate information and help to the best of our ability.

Will a psychological evaluation fix my problem?

A psychological evaluation serves the purpose of determining the cause of the problem and best strategies to address the problem. However, through determining the cause and providing recommendations for treatment, psychological evaluations offer a great way of identifying the unique and individualized care you deserve!
